Why your horoscope does not know your rising sign
A horoscope only asks for your date, so it knows your Sun sign and nothing else. Your rising sign depends on the time and the place, because the Earth turns: the sign coming up in the east changes about every two hours, and the clock in Lyon is not the clock in Nouméa. That is why a rising sign calculator needs all three, and why an approximate time can change it.
I do not know my birth time. What can I do?
It is on your full birth certificate and often in your baby health record. An approximate time gives a probable rising sign: if you are within an hour of a sign change, we say so.
What is the difference between my sign and my rising sign?
Your sign is where the Sun was on the day you were born: what lights you up. Your rising sign is the sign coming up over the horizon at the exact time: the first impression you give. You can be an Aries by Sun and a Taurus rising: quick inside, calm on the surface.
How is it calculated?
Your local time is converted to universal time with the official time zone history (daylight saving included), the sidereal time at your longitude is worked out, then the point of the ecliptic rising at your latitude. Same method as the app, checked against Swiss Ephemeris on 2,000 births.
Born abroad: does that change anything?
Yes, and it is handled: the place sets the time zone and the latitude. A 22:30 birth in Saint-Pierre, Réunion does not have the same sky as Paris at the same hour.
